Sue Truluck - Legal Assistant

When I was a child, my family watched the television program "Perry Mason", whichSarah was about a lawyer. I always wanted to be just like Della Street, Mr. Mason's secretary. My dad even started calling me "Della" because I talked about wanting to be like her when I grew up. She was always at Perry Mason's side and I admired her coolness and efficiency and how resourceful she was. That was the career for me! I grew up in Kelso and graduated from Kelso High School. I focused on business classes with a goal of a career as a legal secretary. I graduated in the top 5% of my class and received the Business Education Department's award for top business student my senior year.

After graduation, I found employment in the business area of a Longview printing company. Although I enjoyed my work there, I still wanted to pursue a career in the legal field. When Wesley Johnson posted a position for a legal assistant I thought my time had come. That was almost twenty-four years ago and Mr. Johnson's office was a small former tanning salon in Rainier, Oregon. Later that year, he moved to a much larger office in Longview on Commerce Avenue, and then to our current location in Kelso in 1996.

I have found my career in the legal field very fulfilling and rewarding. Unlike Perry Mason, Mr. Johnson does not handle murder cases, and for that I am thankful. I find great satisfaction in helping clients work through their personal injury claim, or helping them with their estate plan. People come into our office with problems that are very important to them and we can help. I like that.

Tina Clark - Legal Assistant

In 1987, I flew down here from Fairbanks, Alaska to visit my family. During my vacation my familyTina and I had several picnics at Lake Sacajawea and Willow Grove here in Longview. On these picnics I really started to feel how much I was missing out on by living so far away from my family here in the Longview area. I decided while I was here I would call Trend College and set up an interview to discuss their Legal Secretary Program, since that was my dream job. I signed up for college that day and when I went home to tell my parents, they laughed and said they were happy I was moving "home." I moved to the Longview area six months later and started school. I received my Certificate for Legal Secretary in May, 1989. Shortly after getting my Certificate I got married and started my own family, so I didn't start my Legal Secretary career.

In 1999 I was hired at Cowlitz Bank, here in Longview, as a teller. I continued my banking career for 10 years and then was laid off due to the economy. I decided to go back to school to get my AA Degree in Medical Administrative Support and Certificate in Billing/Coding. Two years later, after a lot of sacrifices, many hours of study group sessions, and sleepless nights, I am proud to say I have my AA Degree and Certificate. My youngest daughter graduated from high school on the same day that I graduated from Lower Columbia College. That was a great day.

I was offered a position here in Kelso as a Legal Assistant with Wesley S. Johnson, Attorney at Law. When I told my family about my new career as a legal assistant to a personal injury attorney, they told me now you have your dream job because you can combine the medical field and legal field. I am truly blessed and love my new career. I have always told my daughters to never give up on your dreams and to want a career not just a job. I could not have made it through school without the love and support of my family.
